Is it a petrified rose? No. A high school art project? No. Some sort of spiny underwater creature? No, and stop guessing. This is a crystal cluster of the remarkably versatile substance known as gypsum. This rose-like formation tends to occur in arid places, such as the desert, and the resulting structure is known as – wait for it – a desert rose.
