Some natural optical illusions look scary. Some look beautiful. And some just look gross. This picture, taken in Antarctica, appears to show blood flowing over the glaciers. So far, so gruesome!
But we’re assured that it’s actually a natural and regular occurrence. At one point, red algae were thought to be responsible, but now it’s thought that the iron oxide in the rocks turns blood-red in the saltwater. In other words, these glaciers aren’t bleeding – they’re rusting!
