We think if someone from medieval Europe had stumbled on this sight, they would have thought they’d found the precise geographic location of the entrance to the underworld. Not only is there a fiery orange mouth down below, but the surface seems to be made up of the charred, petrified forms of damned souls! Chill out there, Dante.
That hole is actually a ‘skylight’ into a ‘lava tube’ – a sort of underground tunnel through which lava flows. And the gray-black forms above? That’s just what lava looks like when it cools and hardens.
