Where on Earth – and why on Earth – would you come across a valley lined with spikes? The answer to the ‘where,’ it seems, is the Dry Andes – an area of South America that covers parts of Chile, Northwest Argentina and Bolivia. And the why?
Apparently, it’s down to a combination of a dew point below freezing and the dry air, which causes patches of snow to sublimate – that is, evaporate without melting – leaving behind these spikes, known as penitentes.
