We feel like a lot of little kids would love this one. These clouds look a little like the Northern Lights in their extraordinary colors. And like the Aurora Borealis, they are usually seen during winter, at high latitudes, like in Scandinavia, Iceland, Alaska and Northern Canada. But they’re actually due to an entirely different phenomenon.
These iridescent beauties are nacreous clouds, sometimes called mother-of-pearl clouds. They are a type of polar stratospheric clouds that occur at great height in very cold temperatures.
