This mountain range looks literally out of this world, especially thanks to the unusual lavender-colored sky at the moment this picture was taken. But this isn’t a picture from a distant planet, or part of a movie set, or the work of a very dedicated graffiti artist.
This is part of the Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park in Gansu Province, China. Over the course of 24 million years, mineral deposits have built up within the red sandstone, causing these red-hued mountains with striations of other colors running through them.
