6 Essential Items Every Pet Owner Should Have

Are you a new pet owner? If so, you must be wondering what supplies you need in order to give that adorable animal the best life it can have. Each species has different needs, but there are basic materials you’ll need to collect. Is that new puppy hungry for some kibble? Does your kitten need to release some pent up energy? Let’s explore the items you want in order to meet your pet’s needs

.1 Food

Like us, animals need nutrition. There are several brands to pick from, so it can be difficult to make a decision. Choosing the cheapest to save a few dollars and even the most expensive due to reputation aren’t the features you should be focused on. The ingredients are the most important. Just like with our food, there can be dozens of ingredients that all have long, unrecognizable names. Do your research first. Choose the brand that has the best ingredients for your species and breed. It will prolong their life and save you some hefty vet bills in the future.

2.  Water

Every animal needs water. Despite their resilience, they also need clean water. Would you want to drink water full of iron or from a glass that’s been sitting out for days? Taking the extra time to make sure they have clean water will improve their health. Invest in a water filter that has motion sensors. It will only turn on when they approach the bowl. Cats, especially, love flowing water. Change the water out (at least) every couple days, to ensure that they’re receiving the cleanest and coldest drink possible.

3. Identification Tag Or Microchip

It may seem unnecessary to put identification tags on indoor pets, but you never know when they could escape. Cats and dogs love to run out the door. It can be due to a smell in the air or simple excitement. They’re much faster than us, so if they don’t want to listen, they’re gone. Identification tags with their name and address can save time and even their lives. There are people who don’t treat strays well. Microchipping them can make it that much easier to find them, as you can find their location with a click of a button. If you have animals that regularly explore the outdoors, then this is essential to their safety.

4.  First Aid Kit

Animals get hurt, too. After escaping the house, they could come back with some cuts and bruises. They could have fought with other animals, which means you need to disinfect their wounds. It’s a good idea to have a pet first aid kit on hand for this. You can use the basics, such as gauze and peroxide. However, there are certain human medications that don’t respond well with other species. If you need to apply ointment to an infected eye, you’ll need ointment specifically meant for that species. If your pet likes to bite during the medical treatments, then invest in a muzzle.

5. Bed And Grooming Supplies

Everyone needs a place to rest. It’s a safe area that’s devoid of threats. Your pet will appreciate a bed of their own, even if they like to encroach on yours. Supplying a few around the house, especially for cats, will make them feel more comfortable in an environment that is controlled by you. Grooming supplies are also needed. Long fur can become tangled and matted. Lizards need soaking bowls, so they can shed properly. Amphibians require water with a certain pH level. The little things are important, so do your research.

6.  Treats And Toys

Who doesn’t love treats after a long day? What about that video game or book you enjoy? Humans love treats and toys, and so do animals. What’s life without joy and fun? Make sure your pet has plenty of treats, however, don’t spoil them. We have limits, and so should they. Toys keep them stimulated, especially indoor pets that can’t leave the house. Your dog will chew on that toy rather than your couch. The cat will scarf down that wet food instead of yelling at you in the early morning hours.
